Clay County Medical Center is pleased to announce the full-time employment of Pulmonary Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Steven Short. Dr. Short will be practicing at Clay Center Family Physicians, and is also available for telehealth appointments starting in January 2023.

Dr. Short and his wife have three grown children and eight grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys drawing and painting, mountain biking, trout fishing, and repairing “old things”. When asked why he chose to practice at Clay Center Family Physicians, Dr. Short responded, “Clay County Medical Center has a great team, excellent nurses, provides high quality care, and has excellent leadership”.

Dr. Short was born in Hoxie, Kansas, his father was a Methodist Minister, and he grew up in small communities throughout Western Kansas. He received his undergraduate degree from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, where he was later given Hall of Fame status, being inducted into the Southwestern College Natural Science Hall of Fame after his extraordinary work at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, New York during the COVID-19 crisis.

Dr. Short attended medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, completed his internship at Flint Osteopathic Hospital, in Flint, Michigan and his residency in internal medicine at University of Kansas School of Medicine. He worked as an internal medicine specialist at Indian Health Service in Tahlequah, Oklahoma where his wife Whitney also worked as a nurse. After the four year completion of that outreach, Dr. Short completed a pulmonary fellowship at the Center for Disease Control in Morgantown, West Virginia.
