Clay County Hospital Foundation is pleased to present a group show featuring artists and collectors. The VW Bug Show and Memorabilia will run until May 23, 2014 in the hospital’s dining room. The exhibition will also have a feature in the display case by the Front Entrance.
Six artists/collectors will be featured in the show: Ron Bender, Randy Rundle, Lori Beikman, Justin Begnoche, Tyce Young, and Rich Gardner. Many of works are city, auto and travel inspired.

The Graffiti Bridge is now painted white and is called Rainbow Bridge but some call it the Marsh Arch Bridge referring to the designs of engineer James Barney Marsh. Radiator Springs is modeled after Baxter Springs in the movie Cars.

Advertisements: 1940’s Clay Center Fireman’s Fund Drive Lawn Sign which was always placed in the clay county court house square; Optima Batteries Poster featuring hot rodders Art and Mike Chrisman driving a Belly Tank. War surplus drop tanks were plentiful and aerodynamically neutral, and it didn't take long to make one into a car, dubbed a lakester. After World War II, hot rodders raced the dry lakes of California to set new land speed records.
Movie Posters: 1950’s Sky Line Drive-In and Star Movie Theatre; Rebel Without a Cause Poster features the handsome James Dean standing by a 1954 Ford; CarsPoster autographed by Dean Walker, President of the Kansas Historic Route 66 Associations. The old tow truck that inspired Tow Mater in the movie Cars has for many years stood at a former Kan-O-Tex gas station in Galena, KS, restored as a Route 66 attraction.
Maps: The Kansas Road Map was first printed by the Kansas Industrial Development Commission in 1940 as a way to promote travel in the state. And Aerial Maps of Clay Center from 1946 which shows the railroad’s influence on the development of Utility Park.
Located in the Display Case: 1960’s Limited Edition Vinyl Record, Chevrolet Sings of Safe Driving and You; Phillips 66 Tire display; 1922 Careful Crossings Campaign; 1957 Standard Gas map features tiny gas pumps where drivers could purchase Standard Gasoline and there were almost no Interstate highways; Fifth Avenue Antique Auto Parts Tag Topper are made by one of the old manufacturing companies established in the early 1940's, "upper" and "downer" styles are available - just like in the "old days"!
LORI BEIKMAN
The three photos of Herbie were taken in 2007. The mixed-media painting titledHerbie 53 was done in 2014. Herbie is a sentient, anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Beetle that is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1968 film The Love Bug. Herbie's racing number "53" was chosen by producer Bill Walsh, after Los Angeles Dodgers baseball player Don Drysdale.

Photo of a 1973 Red Volkswagen Beetle taken in 2011. In 1973, the VW 1303 introduced a curved windscreen, pushed forward and away from the passengers, allowing a redesigned, padded dashboard. A two-speed heater fan, higher rear mudguards, and larger tail lights were added. The changes to the heater/windshield wiper and curved windshield resulted in redesign of the front hood, making the 1971 and 1972 Super Beetle hoods unique.

The Limeliters’ album, “Tonight in Person” reached number 5 in the U.S. charts in 1961. Their second album made the top 40, and their third release, “The Slightly Fabulous Limeliters,” made the top ten in the same year.

RICH GARDNER
Three pen and ink drawings of VW Cabriolet, vehicle designs of automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche, and a John Deere tractor. Some of the most well known cars produced by Karmann in the 20th century are the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet (1949–1980). In June 1934, Porsche received a contract from Hitler to design a "people's car" (or Volkswagen), following on from his previous designs such as the 1931 Type 12 car designed for Zündapp. The first two prototype cars were completed in 1935.
