During Speech Therapy Month in May, we spotlight the indispensable role of speech therapists in transforming lives through communication. This year, Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) wants to underscore the crucial mission of ensuring continuous progress for students, particularly during the summer months.

Speech therapist Megan Gfeller emphasized the significance of uninterrupted support in fostering speech and language development. She stressed that the transition between school years presents a critical juncture where students may experience setbacks without ongoing speech therapy.

"Speech Therapy Month is not just about celebrating our profession; it's about recognizing the vital need for consistent support in every child's journey toward effective communication," states Gfeller. "Especially during the summer break, without the structured environment of speech therapy, it's important to bridge the gap and maintain progress."

Gfeller added, "Many children rely on the classroom routines and speech therapy available in schools to aid their speech and language development. However, during the summer, this support is not available, potentially delaying their progress. As speech therapists, it's our responsibility to ensure that this gap is not overlooked."

The significance of bridging the gap between school years cannot be overstated. Studies have shown that summer learning loss disproportionately affects students with speech and language disorders, widening the achievement gap. By providing targeted interventions and engaging activities during the summer months, our speech therapists at CCMC play a pivotal role in mitigating this disparity.

Please reach out to the Speech Department at CCMC for more information or to your child’s doctor to get a referral for summer speech therapy services.
