Clay County stands out in Kansas in clinical care, according to the annual County Health Rankings report. The program ranked Clay County second overall in Kansas in this category in both 2017 and 2018. Only Johnson County ranks above Clay County.
Statistics used for this ranking are the number of uninsured residents, the ratio of primary care physicians to the county’s population, as well as dentists and mental health providers, the number of preventable hospital stays and a measure of diabetes monitoring and mammography screening.
Clay County is better than the state average in all the categories except the number of dentists and mental health providers and the number of preventable hospital stays. However, in the last year, a new dentist and a new mental health provider have started providing services in Clay County, so those statistics should improve.
Clay County is considered a “Top U.S. Performer” in primary care physicians and diabetes monitoring. To reach this designation, a county has to be in the 90th percentile in the country.
Clay County Medical Center plays a leading role in those statistics.
Austin Gillard, CEO said, “We are honored that Clay County has been rated #2 in Kansas for clinical care. We are blessed with excellent medical providers that not only serve Clay County, but Washington County and Cloud County. We look forward to our ongoing improvement in clinical excellence within North Central Kansas.”
