The Radiology Department at Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) is excited to be able to offer enhanced mammogram imaging with the Siemens Wide Angle Breast Tomosynthesis. Justin Begnoche, Radiology Director, said the new approach to mammography will be available in early May 2018 when construction is complete on the new Women’s Center at CCMC. “We are excited to offer enhanced services in a new, dedicated women’s imaging space.”
The new technology, 3D mammography provides the best and most current approach to viewing breast tissue. With a wider-angle view and thinner slices, the technology leads to better patient care due to higher resolution, fantastic quality and the ability to evaluate dense breast tissue. Jennifer Bush, Radiology Technologist, noted the best part of the improved technology, “Because we can see the tissue better, we will see a reduction in call back imaging and will find smaller lesions sooner.”
Radiology Technologists at the hospital are all mammography certified but will also receive tomography continuing education to use the new machine. The Mammography Technologists in addition to Bush, are Julia Mesalles, Lisa Hiltgen, and Amber Krause. The hospital will maintain the ability to conduct a standard mammogram, but staff expects most patients to opt for the enhanced approach.
Bush emphasized that this doesn’t change the recommendation for annual mammograms. “Having a mammogram is still going to be recommended yearly after the age of 40 or 10 years earlier than when your mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Insurance continues to cover an annual screening mammogram.”
Early detection is key to successful treatment for breast cancer, which impacts one in every eight women. The 3D technology allows detection of lesions that traditional digital technology could not. With the new system, the hospital will realize better image quality with up to 30% lower radiation dosage. The Tomography Mammography is ideal for women with dense breast tissue.
The new Women’s Center will emphasize privacy and a calm and inviting atmosphere with new state of the art equipment. Services available will include mammography, ultrasound, bone density screening, and more.
