March 7th through April 8th, the Clay County Hospital Foundation presents Musselman’s Family Art Exhibit. Art works are available for viewing in the dining room. This exhibit features a mixed media showcase including photography, paintings, paper stained glass, and string art. The artists displaying their work are from oldest to youngest: Michaela, Luke, Levi and Lane and their parents are Michael and Melanie who live on a farm in northern Clay County.
Michaela Musselman’s Artist Statement – I am 16 years- old and I am a 10 year member of the Washington Headliners 4-H Club. This year, I am serving as our 4-H Club President, a Wrestlerette for the CCCHS Wresting team and Junior Class Secretary. I’m also very active in the Clay Center FFA Chapter, National Honor Society, the Breakfast Club, S.A.D.D., Volleyball, Softball, and St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
I was in Visual Arts in 4-H for 8 years and Photography for 9 years. In 4-H Photography, I received Senior Grand Champion last year at the Clay County Fair on my close-up picture of a lavender iris. For the State Fair, this photo was selected to be displayed in the office of K-State President Kirk Schulz for one year. Another one of my photos, I entered in the Kansas Department of Agriculture Photo Contest last fall. It was the Sunrise in February photo. I received 1st place in the Youth Division and was awarded a $100 VISA gift card.
Also last year at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, I was in the Photography Judging Contest. I placed 7th high individual and our River Valley District-Clay County team placed 1st! We were very proud to receive this honor after practicing and working hard for several years!
Luke Musselman’s Artist Statement - I am 14 years- old and I’m in the 8th grade at Linn Lutheran School in Linn, Ks. My hobbies are geography and weather. I have won our school Geography Bee for 2 years. I have participated in the State Geography Bee in Abilene. I have also placed 1st in my grade in the Washington County Spelling Bee for six years. Last year, I placed 3rd overall and participated in the Regional Spelling Bee in Topeka.
I am an 8 year member of the Washington Headliners 4-H Club. I got started in Photography in 4-H because my older sister takes it as a project. I have been in 4-H Photography for 5 years and 4-H Visual Arts for 4 years.
Last year, I entered my photo of the Geary State Fishing Lake Falls in the Happy Birthday Kansas! The Photo Contest organized by the Kansas State Historical Society. I placed 1st in the seventh grade division and received an iPad!! I was very excited!
Levi Musselman’s Artist Statement - I am 11 years-old and a twin to Lane. My hobbies are drawing and building things. I am a 5 year member of the Washington Headliners 4-H Club. This is my fifth year in the 4-H Visual Arts project.
Last year at the Clay County Fair, I got one purple, three blues and a red. My purple was on a tractor I made out of recycled items. It was chosen to be displayed at the State Fair in Hutchinson. I’m also entering it in a Lutheran schools arts competition, Gathering of the Talents, April 2 in Seward, Nebraska.
Lane Musselman’s Artist Statement - I am 11 years-old and a twin to Levi. My hobbies are sports and reading. I have wrestled and played football and basketball. I am also good at spelling and math. I have placed 1st in my grade in the Washington County Spelling Bee for five years. This year, I placed 1st overall in the county and participated in the Regional Spelling Bee in Topeka. I competed in the regional MathCounts competition this year for the first time and placed 5th. With that placing, I qualified for State MathCounts but chose to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee because they were the same day.
I am a 5 year member of the Washington Headliners 4-H Club. This is my second year in the 4-H Photography project and my fifth year in the 4-H Visual Arts project.
Last year at the Clay County Fair, I got 5 purples and 3 blues on my photos. I chose to take the Windmill at Sunset photo to the State Fair and was very excited to receive a purple! I was surprised to get a purple at the State Fair my first year in Photography. I’ve also been in the 4-H Photography Judging Contest and placed 1st in the Intermediate division at the State Fair two years ago.
